Philanthropy

Alpha Phis at UCM are very involved in many different philanthropies throughout the year.

Our main philanthropy internationally is the Alpha Phi Foundation which is a huge supporter of Cardiac Care Research for Women. The Foundation also gives hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in scholarships and aide to women all over the United States and Canada.

During the Biennium of 2008-2010 Alpha Phi Foundation awarded over $265,000.00 in Scholarships, $121,700.00 in emergence aid to their members through the For-get-me-not fund, over $100,000.00 in Heart to Heart Grants for local worthwhile heart related projects recommended by Alpha Phi Chapters and their alumnae throughout the country, and $611,000.00 to support leadership and educational programs for both their collegiate and alumnae members.

Here at UCM, we raise most of our money for the Foundation through our Red Dress Gala held in February of each spring and our Alpha Traz in the fall. Theta Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi raised almost $5,000 in February, 2010 for women’s cardiac care during the 2nd annual Alpha Phi Red Dress Gala. Our grand total during the biennium which ended in June of 2010 exceeded $7000. The 2010 Red Dress Gala was held February 6th, in the Elliott Union Ballroom. More than 250 Alpha Phi members, alumni, friends, and family gathered for a night of dinner and dancing. A total of $4780 was raised through the sale of dinner tickets, raffle, and a silent auction. The silent auction included more than 80 donated items ranging from Cardinal’s tickets to gift cards for local restaurants.

Guest speaker Cathy Sherrer, Asst. Nursing Professor for UCM, spoke to the guests about the importance of cardiac care and health for women. Cardiac care is a main focus of the Alpha Phi Foundation, the sorority’s national philanthropy, and proceeds from this event will benefit the cause.

Our events are so successful because we have not only the support of the planning committees and chapter members but our alumni, friends, and community as well.

But that’s not all we do for our community! We help to raise cardiac care awareness during Cardiac Care Week, support Lighthouse and the area Boys and Girls Club, participate in Highway Cleanup, and we have women who volunteer at many different places. Alpha Phi supports other sororities and fraternities on campus by donating money or participating in their philanthropic events through the year. Alpha Phis both locally and all over the world believe in giving and supporting Cardiac Care and worthwhile projects. Alpha Phis believe in helping others!
